This class is intended for serious beginners through advanced students.
In this class, we’ll be focusing on portrait sketching and how to paint quick alla prima portrait sketches in 3 hours. We’ll be focusing on using big brushes, how to “draw with the brush” to create form quickly, and how to mass in light and shadow to create those forms. Instead of approaching the portrait from a linear perspective as in most of my other classes, we’ll be approaching the portrait from a value perspective, using light and dark to recognize shapes quickly and build up a portrait in a more sculptural fashion.
Portrait sketching can be a fun and more lighthearted way to approach portrait painting. It can capture an immediacy of expression and energy, while still creating a likeness. This class assumes that you have a reasonable amount of drawing experience or have taken some of my drawing classes before, as there will be very little drawing instruction and we’ll be focusing much more on paint handling and the sculptural effects of light.
You will leave with a deeper understanding of:
- How to structure the major forms of the head using light and shadow
- Structural thinking, constructing instead of copying
- How to stop fearing big brushes
- Brushwork and experimenting and playing with brushmarks
- A deeper understanding of colour and value
- Muddy colours and how to stop fearing mixing them
- Expression & how to capture it in a short period of time
This class is a combination of demonstration and practice time. During practice time, I will spend one-on-one time with each student, giving guidance, critique and support.
I will be demonstrating a portrait sketch on the Friday morning and then students will have a chance to tackle it in a 3 hour pose that afternoon. There will be a different model on Saturday and Sunday and we will have a new 6 hour pose each day to practice sketching.
Class sizes are small so that everyone will have one-on-one time with me by the end of the course.
Who these classes are for:
These classes are for the serious beginner to advanced artist. They are focused and intense and I will be sharing as much of my knowledge as I can in the 18 hours we have together. If you love Paint & Wine Night at your local bar, these classes are probably not your thing.
Who am I and what do I know?
I’m Sarah Marie Lacy, and I’m a full-time professional artist and portrait painter. I’ve studied with master artists in France, and have won international awards for my work, which makes me sound very fancy. I am deeply passionate about the work that I do and love sharing it with others and watching my students improve and progress.
What we don’t cover:
I won’t be spending a ton of time and energy on the materials side of things (grinding your own paints, pigments etc). The magic is not in the materials, and other artists will do a better job teaching that. This is about getting knowledge of artistic concepts in your hands so you can get to making the work you want to be making.
- An unlined notebook! I don’t do handouts because you won’t learn as much if I just tell you what to do. I want you to make notes of what I’m saying, copy the demos, draw along with me while I talk. You’ll learn so much more this way. (See the science behind it here.)
- Your preferred support: canvas, masonite boards, wood panels, paper
I’ll send out a full materials list after you register, with a suggested colour palette, suggested brush shapes and sizes, and recommendations for canvas. For Gamsol and medium, you’ll be able to purchase those supplies directly from me at cost if that’s easier.
