One of the keys to beautiful figure painting that has a sense of volume and light is being able to build subtle, continuous and accurate gradations in paint. If you’ve ever taken a class with me, you’ve heard me harp on about how useful eggs are to practice this skill (eggs being one of the slowest gradating organic forms that are similar to the human body). There’s also a figure painting exercise called a “rounding study” that applies the ideas of egg painting to the figure.
This class will combine the two: on the first day we’ll start with a simple egg painting to begin to grasp just how subtle the gradations we need to build are. On the second day we’ll tackle the “rounding study”, learning to see the subtle gradations on the human body on the varied egg-like forms that we have.
You don’t need a ton of painting experience or drawing experience to take this class, although it will help. But this exercise is simple enough that students with minimal painting experience will be able to participate and learn a lot!
You will leave with a deeper understanding of:
- light and shadow
- how to build gradations
- how to handle your brushes
- how to make a form feel full & round
- the rules of organic form
- how light and organic form interact
The class will be a combination of demo and practice time. Both demonstrations will happen on Saturday and Sunday morning, with student painting time happening in the afternoons. During practice time, I will spend one-on-one time with each student, giving guidance, critique and support.
Who these classes are for:
These classes are for the serious beginner or anyone looking to improve how they handle paint. They are focused and intense and I will be sharing as much of my knowledge as I can in the 12 hours we have together. If you love Paint & Wine Night at your local bar, these classes are probably not your thing.
Who am I and what do I know?
I’m Sarah Marie Lacy, and I’m a full-time professional artist and portrait painter. I’ve studied with master artists in France, and have won international awards for my work, which makes me sound very fancy. I am deeply passionate about the work that I do and love sharing it with others and watching my students improve and progress.
What we don’t cover:
I don’t get deeply into materials, how to use materials, how to sharpen your pencils the best way, etc. The magic is not in the materials, and other artists will do a better job teaching that. This is about getting knowledge of artistic concepts in your hands so you can get to making the work you want to be making. I will explain enough of the basics to make sure you know what you’re doing though!
- An unlined notebook! I don’t do handouts because you won’t learn as much if I just tell you what to do. I want you to make notes of what I’m saying, copy the demos, draw along with me while I talk. You’ll learn so much more this way. (See the science behind it here.)
- Your preferred support: canvas, masonite boards, wood panels
