Tuesdays, Jan 7 – March 24 2020, FULL
6:30pm – 9:30pm
36 hours of class time/12 weeks
Cost: $750 (includes model fees & HST) – this payment can be broken into two $375 payments
Location: Southminster United Church, 15 Aylmer Ave (Galt St entrance)
Max 11 participants
This is an intensive 12 week painting class, with a sustained 12 week pose so that students may work towards a more finished painting. The first 6 weeks will be dedicated to creating the underpainting and the second 6 week session will be dedicated to the “second pass.” This is the painting technique I use to create all of my paintings.
We will cover colour theory and palette control, value structures, brushwork and paint handling, and much more, all in the context of long pose figure painting. This class will not cover how to draw the figure, therefore some figure drawing experience will be helpful. Some painting experience would be helpful as well, although I am happy to work with students who are more experienced with a pencil than a paintbrush.
This class is intended for serious beginners through advanced students.
You will leave with a deeper understanding of:
- How to build gradations in paint
- How to shape your gradations better
- How to make your figures feel full and round, not flat and stiff
- How to combine knowledge of colour and value with handling the paint
- How to handle paint and make useful brushstrokes
This class is a combination of demonstration and practice time. During practice time, I will spend one-on-one time with each student, giving guidance, critique and support.
Making the first class is critical as the first class is a demo of what we’ll be practicing over the coming weeks.
Class sizes are small so that everyone will have one-on-one time with me by the end of the course.
Who these classes are for:
These classes are for the serious beginner to more advanced student. They are focused and intense and I will be sharing as much of my knowledge as I can in the 36 hours we have together. If you love Paint & Wine Night at your local bar, these classes are probably not your thing.
Who am I and what do I know?
I’m Sarah Marie Lacy, and I’m a full-time professional artist and portrait painter. I’ve studied with master artists in France, and have won international awards for my work, which makes me sound very fancy. I am deeply passionate about the work that I do and love sharing it with others and watching my students improve and progress.
What we don’t cover:
I won’t be spending a ton of time and energy on the materials side of things. If this is your first time painting, I’ll help you get sorted and organized, but I’m also not going to get into deep discussions about the science of paints. The magic is not in the materials, and other artists will do a better job teaching that. This is about getting knowledge of artistic concepts in your hands so you can get to making the work you want to be making.
- An unlined notebook! I don’t do handouts because you won’t learn as much if I just tell you what to do. I want you to make notes of what I’m saying, copy the demos, draw along with me while I talk. You’ll learn so much more this way. (See the science behind it here.)
- Canvas or canvas paper
- Black masking tape
I’ll send out a full materials list after you register, with a suggest colour palette, suggested brush shapes and sizes, and recommendations for canvas. For canvas paper, masking tape, Gamsol and medium, you’ll be able to purchase those supplies directly from me at cost if that’s easier.
IMPORTANT: Payment & Refund Policies
Payment is non-refundable and non-transferable after Jan 1, 2020. If the class is cancelled due to a lack of registrants or other circumstances, your money will be refunded in its entirety and within 7 days of cancellation.
