This class is intended to give students a solid foundation in portraiture by teaching head structure, individual character and lighting the portrait, and how to handle these features in oil paint* by working from a live model every week.
We’ll be starting in pencil to get a handle on the structure of the features and learn how to make a useful drawing to start a portrait painting (which is different than a drawing that we intend to complete in pencil). We’ll then move on to painting, learning how to do colour studies of the head first, then underpainting techniques in both limited and full palette, and finally what we call the “second pass” which is the final layer of paint to produce a completed portrait. Each session is 3 hours, giving us plenty of time to study and practice (and have a coffee break!)
*Oil paint is where I have the deepest knowledge and can provide the most technical support. However, if you prefer to work in acrylics, watercolour or pastels, I’m happy to work with you in your preferred medium as the ideas & concepts are applicable no matter what medium you choose.
You will leave with a deeper understanding of:
- How to structure the major forms of the head
- How to paint eyes, nose, ears, mouth, and hair
- How to correctly use and think of your block-in to prep for painting
- How to handle the paint effectively/brushwork
- A deeper understanding of colour and value
- Muddy colours and how to stop fearing mixing them
- How to start and finish a portrait painting from a technical standpoint
Classes will be a combination of demos and practice time. There will be 4 demonstrations: colour studies, drawing the portrait for painting, underpainting and second pass painting. The rest of the time will be practice time and I’ll be providing plenty of one-on-one support and guidance.
Because class sizes are small, each student will get plenty of one-on-one time with me by the end of the course.
An unlined notebook! I don’t do handouts because you won’t learn as much if I just tell you what to do. I want you to make notes of what I’m saying, copy the demos, draw along with me while I talk. You’ll learn so much more this way. (See the science behind it here.)
Canvas and canvas paper
Black masking tape
I’ll send out a full materials list after you register, with a suggested colour palette, suggested brush shapes and sizes, and recommendations for canvas. For canvas paper, masking tape, Gamsol and medium, you’ll be able to purchase those supplies directly from me at cost if that’s easier. I do not sell canvasses.
Who am I and what do I know?
I’m Sarah Marie Lacy, and I’m a full-time professional artist and portrait painter. I’ve studied with master artists in France, and have won international awards for my work, which makes me sound very fancy. I am deeply passionate about the work that I do and love sharing it with others and watching my students improve and progress.
What we don’t cover:
I won’t be spending a ton of time and energy on the materials side of things. If this is your first time painting, I’ll help you get sorted and organized, but I’m also not going to get into deep discussions about the science of paints. The magic is not in the materials, and other artists will do a better job teaching that. This is about getting knowledge of artistic concepts in your hands so you can get to making the work you want to be making.
Who these classes are for:
These classes are for the serious beginner to advanced artist. They are focused and intense and I will be sharing as much of my knowledge as I can in the 24 hours we have together. If you love Paint & Wine Night at your local bar, these classes are probably not your thing.
